Cherry blossom season is Japan's most in-demand travel window — and the one that requires the most lead time to execute correctly. Hotels sell out 12–18 months in advance for peak dates; transport windows fill fast; and the bloom itself moves unpredictably. Agents who know how to sell sakura season will always have a strong March–April product. Here is how to do it.
When does cherry blossom season happen in Japan
The sakura front (sakura zensen) moves north from late February to early May:
- Kyushu and western Honshu (Fukuoka, Hiroshima) — typically late March.
- Tokyo and Kanto — typically late March to early April.
- Kyoto and Kansai — typically late March to early April, peaking around April 1–7.
- Тохоку (Hirosaki, Sendai) — typically mid to late April.
- Хоккайдо (Sapporo, Matsumae) — late April to early May.
The bloom lasts 7–10 days in each location; peak bloom (mankai) is 2–5 days. Every year the dates shift by 1–2 weeks depending on winter temperatures. Explera tracks the Japan Meteorological Corporation's annual forecast and updates clients as soon as the model firms up (typically late January).
Top cherry blossom spots by city
Токио - Ueno Park — the classic hanami crowd scene. - Chidorigafuchi — canal-side viewing from rowing boats under a canopy of blooms. - Shinjuku Gyoen — the quietest option with multiple cherry varieties extending the season.
Киото - Maruyama Park — the famous weeping cherry (shidarezakura) lit up at night. - Philosopher's Path (Tetsugaku-no-michi) — a canal-side walk lined with 450 cherry trees. - Kiyomizudera — the temple stage framed by blooms against the Higashiyama hillside.
Осака - Osaka Castle Park — 600 cherry trees around the castle moat; a spectacular backdrop.
Regional highlights - Hirosaki Castle (Aomori) — arguably Japan's most photogenic sakura site; pink petals floating on the moat. - Kakunodate (Akita) — a samurai town with weeping cherries lining the buke-yashiki streets. - Mount Yoshino (Nara) — 30,000 trees covering a mountainside; a World Heritage site.
How to build a sakura itinerary
7 nights: Tokyo to Kyoto Arrive Tokyo around March 28 (use the 10-day golden route framework as a base). Move to Kyoto and Osaka around April 3 to catch the later bloom. Works for most years; Explera adjusts departure flexibility by ±3 days using our flexible-date hotel block strategy.
Shoulder sakura: Tohoku and Hokkaido For agents whose clients cannot travel in late March–early April, Tohoku (mid-April) and Hokkaido (late April–May) offer uncrowded sakura at some of Japan's most beautiful castle towns. These are premium, low-footfall programs.
Booking and lead time advice for agents
- Book 12–18 months out for peak Tokyo/Kyoto dates (late March–first week of April).
- Flexible windows — advise clients to keep a 4–5 day flexible arrival window so Explera can slot them into the right hotel block for optimal bloom timing.
- Night illuminations — Maruyama Park, Osaka Castle and Hirosaki Castle all run evening lit-up events; these sell out and require advance booking through the DMC.
- Rail seat reservations — all Shinkansen reserved seats should be booked at program confirmation, not on arrival.
