Japan's Widening Direct-Flight Map: New Routes Into the Cities Beyond Tokyo

9 September 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 3 min read

For most of the inbound boom, the direct-flight map of Japan had two big doors — Tokyo and Osaka — and everything else meant a connection. That is changing quickly. A run of recently announced and launched services puts direct international lift into the regional gateways: Korean Air between Seoul and Hiroshima, Malaysia Airlines between Kuala Lumpur and Fukuoka, Air Canada between Vancouver and Sapporo, a new San Francisco–Sapporo service, Delta returning to Narita with a Seattle route, and United opening San Francisco–Naha, Okinawa from late March 2027. For agents, each of these is not just a flight — it is a different Japan itinerary that suddenly prices and paces better.

Why route news is itinerary news

A direct flight into a regional gateway changes three things at once:

  • The open-jaw gets cheaper and simpler. In one city, out another — the shape that saves a backtracking rail day — works best when both ends have international lift. Every new regional route adds pairs: into Sapporo and out of Tokyo, into Fukuoka and out of Osaka.
  • The first day stops being a transfer day. A client landing directly in Hokkaido or Kyushu starts their programme that afternoon instead of spending day one connecting through Haneda or Narita — the arithmetic our secondary airports guide is built on.
  • Regional programmes become sellable to more markets. A Kyushu circuit was always excellent; with direct lift into Fukuoka from Southeast Asia it is also convenient, which is what actually moves bookings.
The wing view on approach — every new direct route into a regional gateway removes a connection from somebody's itinerary.

What each new door opens

  • Sapporo (New Chitose): with Vancouver and San Francisco services joining the map, Hokkaido stops being a domestic add-on and becomes a first landing — powder season, summer flower fields and the seafood table, all without a Tokyo connection.
  • Fukuoka: the Kuala Lumpur link plugs Kyushu straight into Southeast Asia. Fukuoka's airport sits minutes from the city centre, which makes it one of Japan's most efficient arrivals anywhere.
  • Hiroshima: the Seoul service supports the western Honshu circuit — Hiroshima and Miyajima, Okayama and the Setouchi coast — as an entry point rather than a mid-trip stop.
  • Okinawa (Naha): United's San Francisco service, from late March 2027, gives the beach-and-diving programme its first one-stop-free North American door — worth holding in mind now for 2027 itineraries.
  • Narita: Delta's Seattle return adds Pacific Northwest capacity at exactly the moment record arrivals are straining the Tokyo gateways.

How the trade should use the new map

Build the itinerary from the route pair, not the other way round. We check current direct services from the client's own market first, then shape the programme as an open-jaw between the two best doors — and we price the alternative through Tokyo alongside it, because schedules and seasonal frequencies shift and a route that exists is not always the route that fits. Airline schedules are the fastest-moving fact in this business: every routing in a proposal is verified against current schedules at quotation, not remembered from a news cycle.

The regional gateway arrival — smaller terminal, shorter lines, and the programme starting the same afternoon.

FAQ

Which Japanese cities have new direct international flights? Recent announcements and launches include Seoul–Hiroshima (Korean Air), Kuala Lumpur–Fukuoka (Malaysia Airlines), Vancouver–Sapporo (Air Canada), a San Francisco–Sapporo service, Seattle–Narita (Delta), and San Francisco–Naha from late March 2027 (United). Schedules should always be verified at booking.

Why do direct routes into regional airports matter for itineraries? They enable open-jaw shapes — in one city, out another — that remove backtracking, and they turn day one from a connection day into a programme day. Regional circuits become genuinely convenient rather than merely possible.

Is it better to fly into Tokyo or a regional gateway? It depends on the programme. A Hokkaido- or Kyushu-led itinerary is stronger through its own gateway; a Golden Route trip still suits Tokyo or Osaka. We price both shapes, because fares and frequencies move.

Do new routes always last? No — routes are added and withdrawn with demand, which is why we verify every routing against current schedules at quotation rather than assuming an announcement still holds.
