Selling Japan to the Chinese Market: What Mainland Agents Need From a DMC

23 September 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 3 min read

Mainland China is the single largest source market for inbound Japan, and the one whose operating requirements differ most from the English-speaking trade. Agents selling Japan from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Chengdu are not running a slower version of a European programme — they are running a different product, with different party shapes, different lead times and a different definition of what a good day looks like. Here is what we are asked for, and how we quote it.

What the briefs actually look like

  • Two distinct products, rarely one. Organised group departures and high-spending FIT now sit side by side, and they need opposite handling: the group wants coach logistics, guaranteed dining and predictable inclusions; the FIT wants a private guide, flexible pacing and access rather than volume.
  • Guide language is the binding constraint. Mandarin-speaking licensed guides on peak dates are the scarcest component we manage for this market, ahead of rooms. Cantonese adds another layer of scarcity. Lock the guide before the flight.
  • Party sizes cluster at the ends. Families and multigenerational parties of four to eight, or full coach groups — the middle is thinner than in Western markets, and the room mix has to follow.
  • The calendar is its own. Chinese New Year, the Qingming and Labour Day breaks and the October National Day week move demand in ways Japan's own peak periods do not predict. Two calendars stack, and the overlaps are where programmes fail.
Group and FIT are opposite products from the same market — the brief has to say which.

Where a DMC earns its fee here

  • Payment and settlement. We quote net rates in the currency the agent works in and settle on terms agreed at contracting, so the exchange exposure is not sitting on the retail side of the transaction.
  • Dining is not an afterthought. Expectations around group meals, dietary preferences and the balance of Japanese and Chinese food are specific and worth agreeing in writing. A programme that gets the dining wrong is remembered for it whatever else went right.
  • Shopping is itinerary, not filler. Duty-free floors, depachika and drugstore stops are a stated reason for travel for part of this market — scheduled properly they raise satisfaction, dropped in randomly they eat the day.
  • Documentation discipline. Visa support letters, itinerary confirmations and hotel vouchers have to be accurate, consistent and issued on time. We treat the paperwork as part of the product, in the agent's branding where the service is white-label.

The honest constraints

Entry requirements for Chinese nationals differ from the visa-exempt markets and change; we confirm the current rules against official sources at booking rather than quoting them from memory, and we never promise an outcome that belongs to a consulate. Availability on Chinese New Year and the National Day week behaves like Golden Week — book on those horizons or move the dates.

Mandarin-speaking licensed guides are the scarcest component in this market — scarcer than rooms.

FAQ

Do you provide Mandarin-speaking guides in Japan? Yes — nationally licensed Mandarin guides, assigned by itinerary rather than by rota, with Cantonese available on request. They are the most oversubscribed component on peak dates, so we secure them before the rest of the programme.

Can you handle both large groups and high-end FIT from China? Both, and we quote them differently. Groups get coach, guide and dining logistics built around a fixed shape; FIT gets pacing, access and private guiding. The two are not the same product at different prices.

Which Chinese holiday periods should agents plan around? Chinese New Year, Qingming, the Labour Day break and the October National Day week, and their overlaps with Japan's own Golden Week, Obon and Silver Week. Two calendars stack in Japan, and the collisions are where availability disappears.

What about visas for Chinese travellers to Japan? Requirements differ from the visa-exempt markets and change, so we verify the current rules at booking and issue accurate supporting documentation. We do not predict consular decisions.
