The Michinoku Coastal Trail runs for about 1,025 kilometres along Japan's north-east Pacific coast, from Kabushima in Hachinohe, Aomori, to Matsukawa-ura in Soma, Fukushima. It crosses four prefectures and 29 municipalities, and it was created by Japan's Ministry of the Environment after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, largely within Sanriku Fukko National Park. The full course opened in 2019. With Tohoku named in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2027, the trail is about to be asked for by clients who have never heard of the region.
What the trail is
- A long-distance trail, walked in sections. Almost nobody walks it end to end on a trade programme. The product is a few well-chosen days: cliffs, fishing ports, pine forest and beaches, with the coast's recovery as the story that connects them.
- A route through communities. The trail links towns that were rebuilt after 2011, and walkers meet them — local lodges, seafood, markets and guides.
- A trail with infrastructure. Trail centres, including one in Natori, provide maps and information, and waymarking runs along the route.
