Otaru: Canal, Glass and Sushi on a Sapporo Day Trip

30 September 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 2 min read

Otaru is the half-day that almost every Hokkaido programme can fit. A short train ride west of Sapporo along the coast, it was once one of Hokkaido's busiest ports, and the warehouses of that era now line the Otaru Canal as shops, restaurants and galleries. For agents, it is low-risk and high-return: easy to reach, compact enough to walk, and good in every season.

What clients do there

  • Walk the canal. The canal, completed in 1923, and its stone warehouses are the town's signature, at their most atmospheric in the evening and under snow.
  • Glass. Otaru is known for glassmaking, with shops and workshops where clients can watch or try glassblowing.
  • Music boxes. The Otaru Music Box Museum, in a historic building, is a favourite with families and shoppers.
  • Sushi. A port town's sushi, with a whole street of counters. Lunch here is often the highlight.

Seasons and timing

  • Winter brings the Snow Light Path festival in February, when the canal and streets are lit with lanterns in the snow. It is also the busiest time, and footing on icy streets needs care.
  • Summer and autumn are easier for walking and pair well with the coast or a Niseko green-season stay.
  • Time of day matters. Day-trippers crowd the canal at midday; an evening visit, or an overnight stay, shows a quieter town.

How we build it

Otaru works as a half-day or full-day from Sapporo, by rail or private vehicle, or as a stop between Sapporo and Niseko. For groups we reserve the sushi lunch and any glass workshop in advance and plan the walking route around the season. See our Hokkaido group tours guide for the wider programme.
