Most agents building a rail itinerary in Japan reach for the Japan Rail Pass. For many groups it is not the best tool. The JR companies sell group tickets with their own discounts, seat blocks and free places for tour leaders on larger parties, and on a well-defined route they can be the simpler and cheaper way to move a group. Knowing how they work lets you compare the two properly.
How JR group tickets work
The rules below are the ones the JR companies publish for ordinary groups. JR Shikoku sets them out in English, and we confirm the current terms with the operating company for every booking.
- Eight or more people travelling together on the same trains and the same route qualify as a group.
- The discount depends on the season. It is 15% in the quieter periods — mid-January to the end of February, June, September and 1 November to 20 December — and 10% at other times of the year.
- Large groups receive free places. Groups of 31 to 50 receive one free fare, 51 to 100 receive two, and so on in steps of fifty.
- Booking opens early and closes early. Applications are accepted from nine months to fourteen days before departure. Groups travelling on a special group train need to apply at least two months ahead.
- One ticket covers the party. The group travels together on the booked trains. Changes and cancellations follow group rules, not individual ones.
Group ticket or Japan Rail Pass?

- Group tickets win on fixed routes with only a few rail legs — a Golden Route with coaches in the cities, for example — and in the seasons with the 15% discount.
- Group tickets suit tour leaders. The free places on larger groups reduce the cost of the escort, and seats are reserved together.
- Mixed groups need care. A party in which some members already hold a pass cannot always be ticketed as one group. We cost both options before we quote.
Luggage and seating on the shinkansen
On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, bags with total dimensions over 160 cm need a seat booked with an oversized baggage area.
