The main hall of Shuri Castle in Naha burned down in October 2019. After seven years of rebuilding, the Cabinet Office will hold a completion ceremony on 22 November 2026, and the hall opens to the public from noon on 23 November 2026. For agents selling Okinawa, this is the best new cultural reason to add Naha to a beach programme.
Why it matters
Shuri Castle was the royal seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled Okinawa for about 450 years before it became part of Japan. The castle site is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Ryukyu sites. The rebuilt main hall, the Seiden, is lacquered in the kingdom's deep red, and it is the centrepiece of the site.
What to know before booking
- Reservations for the interior. Visits inside the main hall need an advance reservation, and entry numbers are limited for safety. We book this before we confirm the rest of the day.
- Groups from 7 December. The operator does not accept group visits to the interior from 23 November to 6 December 2026, when it expects heavy crowds. From 7 December, group entry is allocated by lottery through its group reservation form, so we apply well ahead.
- Admission is changing. The operator has announced a revision of the admission fee with the reopening. We confirm the rate at the time of booking.
- The grounds stay open. The gates, walls and viewpoints over Naha were open during the rebuilding and remain part of the visit.

How to sell it
- A half-day in Naha. Shuri fits easily into an arrival or departure day, close to the airport.
- Culture with the beach. Pair it with the resorts of the west coast; see our Okinawa beach and diving guide.
- Ryukyu culture. Add a traditional dance, textile or pottery experience in Naha.
- Rain plan. The interior makes Shuri a good option on a wet day.

How we plan it
We book the main hall reservation first, then build the day around it with transport, a guide and lunch. For more ideas, see our UNESCO World Heritage guide.
