Karuizawa, in Nagano Prefecture, has been a summer retreat for Tokyo since the late 19th century. It sits about 1,000 metres above sea level, so summers are cooler than in the city, and it is roughly an hour from Tokyo by the Hokuriku Shinkansen. For groups it works as a day trip, an overnight stop on the way to Nagano or Kanazawa, or a quiet base for a meeting.
What to see and do
- Kyu-Karuizawa. The old centre, with a main street of shops and cafés and the churches that date from the town's early days as a resort.
- Harunire Terrace. A small village of shops and restaurants along a stream in the woods.
- Shiraito Falls. A wide, low waterfall that falls like threads over a rock wall, a short drive north of town.
- Outlet shopping. A large outlet mall stands right next to Karuizawa Station, which suits clients with a shopping list.
- Mount Asama. An active volcano that dominates the view to the north.

When to go
- Summer. The main season, when Tokyo residents escape the heat. Weekends are busy.
- Autumn. Late October to early November brings strong autumn colour.
- Winter. Quieter, with a ski area next to the station and snowy forest.
Meetings and events
Karuizawa has resort hotels with meeting rooms and a calm setting. It hosted the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in April 2023. For a small board meeting or offsite, it is an easy move from Tokyo. See our MICE and incentive guide.

How we plan it
We plan shinkansen seats, local transport and a mix of walks, food and shopping. Karuizawa pairs well with Kusatsu's hot springs; see our Kusatsu guide. For outdoor stays, see our glamping guide.
