Zenko-ji Gokaicho 2027: Planning Nagano for Groups

Explera DMC Japan recommends planning Nagano early for 2027. Zenko-ji holds its Gokaicho, the display of a sacred Buddhist image traditionally held every seven years, from 4 April to 19 June 2027. Weekends will be crowded and temple lodgings are already taking bookings, so we plan weekday visits, early mornings and a day in Togakushi.

Zenko-ji is one of Japan's best-known temples, in the centre of Nagano city. Its principal image is never shown. During the Gokaicho, the temple displays the Maedate Honzon, a second image made in its likeness, and the dates for 2027 are 4 April to 19 June. On 28 September 2026, Rengein, a shukubo (temple lodging) in the temple town, announced that it had opened bookings for the 2027 period.

What does the Gokaicho mean for groups?

  • Crowds. Expect long queues at weekends and during Golden Week, from late April to early May. We plan weekday visits wherever we can.
  • Rooms. Nagano city and the temple lodgings fill early. Shukubo stays come with simple meals and the temple's morning service, but have limited rooms and fixed meal times.
  • Morning service. Zenko-ji holds its morning service every day. Groups that stay overnight can attend before the crowds arrive.
  • Access. Nagano is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo, so a Gokaicho visit fits into a wider Japan Alps route; see our Matsumoto and Nagano guide.

Why add Togakushi?

Togakushi Shrine sits in cedar forest in the mountains north-west of Nagano city. According to the Nagano Prefectural Museum of History, 2027 is also the year of the shrine's largest festival, the Shikinen Taisai. Dates had not been published when we wrote this, so we confirm them before building a programme. Togakushi is also known for its soba. For the area's winter wildlife, see our snow monkeys guide, and for temple stays elsewhere, our Koyasan guide.
