ARTE TOKYO 2026: Tokyo's New Arts Festival for Groups

Explera DMC Japan is building Tokyo evenings around ARTE TOKYO, a new citywide arts festival run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government from 10 October to 31 December 2026. It links art, theatre, music and illuminations across three areas: the waterfront, Hibiya and Marunouchi, and Yoyogi and Shibuya. Each programme sets its own dates.

ARTE TOKYO is the first edition of the Tokyo International Arts Festival, organised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the festival's executive committee. It has no single venue. Instead it ties together events in parks, along the waterfront and in other public spaces, including a revival of the Tokyo 2020 cultural programme.

What is on in each area?

  • The waterfront. The festival's July programme release lists the Tokyo Aqua Symphony fountain show, which has run in Odaiba since March 2026, the international art exhibition TOKYO ATLAS, and Illumination Island Odaiba.
  • Hibiya and Marunouchi. Seasonal illuminations along the office streets of Marunouchi and around Hibiya Park, with cultural programmes in the park.
  • Yoyogi and Shibuya. The Omotesando illumination and a night-time art programme in Yoyogi Park.
  • Hamarikyu Gardens. A night art project for the garden's 80th anniversary, planned for about 30 evenings between mid-November and late December. Exact dates were still being set in July.

The release names these programmes from the previous year's information, and each organiser announces its own dates. We confirm every date before it goes into an itinerary.

How do groups use the festival?

  • An evening walk, not a ticket. Most illuminations are outdoors in streets and parks, so we plan a guided walk with a coach drop-off and pick-up at each end.
  • One area per evening. The three areas are far apart. We pair one with dinner nearby, or with a dinner cruise on Tokyo Bay.
  • Weekends are busy. Crowds peak on weekend evenings and in the run-up to Christmas, so we suggest weeknights for larger groups.
