Japan Trip from Singapore: Flights, Seasons and Snow

A Japan trip from Singapore is a short-haul holiday with a long-haul feel: the flight takes around seven hours, Japan is only one hour ahead, and the seasons are the opposite of home, from cherry blossom to deep winter snow. Singapore passport holders can usually visit Japan for short stays without a visa. The main choices are when to go and how to split a week between the cities and the countryside.

Entry rules and flights

Singapore passport holders can usually visit Japan for short tourist stays without a visa. Entry rules can change, so check the current requirements with the Embassy of Japan in Singapore before travel. Our Japan visa requirements guide explains how entry works.

Non-stop flights connect Singapore with Tokyo and Osaka, and some routes also reach Sapporo and other cities, depending on the season. Many flights leave Singapore late at night and land in Japan in the morning, so plan a gentle first day. Flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka saves a day of backtracking.

Choosing the season

Seasons are the main reason Singaporeans go to Japan, so the trip starts with the calendar.

  • Snow, December to February — Hokkaido, the Japan Alps and northern Japan are reliably snowy. Sapporo, Otaru and the hot-spring towns are a first taste of real winter; Niseko and Hakuba are for skiing.
  • Cherry blossom, late March to early April — the busiest and most beautiful weeks; book early. Our cherry blossom forecast guide explains the timing.
  • Early summer, June — green, quieter, and Hokkaido is at its best while the rest of Japan has its rainy season.
  • Autumn colour, November — the best weather of the year in Kyoto and Tokyo.

Singapore's school holidays in June and from late November to December are peak times for family trips, so book flights and hotels early for those weeks.

Packing for the cold

A first winter trip needs real cold-weather clothing: a warm, windproof jacket, thermal layers, gloves, a hat and waterproof shoes with good grip for icy pavements. Buildings and trains are heated, so layers you can take off work better than one heavy coat. Ski clothing can be rented at the resorts.

A first itinerary

For a week, choose two bases: Tokyo and Kyoto, with a night near Mt Fuji or in Hakone. In winter, swap one city for Hokkaido — a few nights in Sapporo and a hot-spring town. Our 7-day itinerary shows the classic route, and the Japan travel guide links every planning page.

Food, money and practical tips

Japan is easy for food lovers, and travellers who need halal or vegetarian meals should plan ahead, as many dishes use pork, alcohol or fish stock. Carry some yen in cash for small restaurants and temples, and use a rechargeable IC card for trains. Japan drives on the left, as Singapore does. Since November 2026, tax-free shopping works as a refund claimed when you leave Japan; our Japan shopping guide explains the steps.
