In September 2026 the Michelin Guide published its latest Michelin Key selection. Japan now has 145 hotels with Keys, including 19 new entries. Seven hold three Keys, 23 hold two and 115 hold one. For agents selling luxury Japan, the list is a useful outside reference, but it is a starting point for a quote, not the quote itself.
What a Michelin Key means
The Keys rate the stay, not the restaurant. One Key means a special stay, two Keys an outstanding stay and three Keys an exceptional stay. The inspectors look at design, service, character and value at every price level, so the list includes ryokan and small country hotels as well as city towers.
The three-Key hotels in Japan
- In Tokyo: Bulgari Hotel Tokyo, Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi and Palace Hotel Tokyo.
- Ryokan: Gora Kadan in Hakone and Asaba in Shuzenji, on the Izu Peninsula.
- Elsewhere: Amanemu in Ise-Shima and Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto.
New entries this year include Capella Kyoto, Park Hyatt Tokyo, Gora Kadan Fuji and Hotel Hakurin Hakodate, with others in Hokkaido, Iwate, Nara and Okinawa.

How to use the list in a quote
- As a shortlist, not a rule. A Key is a good sign, but the right hotel still depends on the route, the room types and the client.
- Expect demand. A new Key can bring more demand, and small ryokan have very few rooms. Early requests matter.
- Group size. Many Key-rated ryokan cannot take a large group. We split groups or pair a city hotel with a smaller inn.
- Check what is included. Ryokan rates usually include dinner and breakfast; city hotels usually do not.

How we plan it
We check availability, room types and group limits, and we compare Key-rated hotels with strong options that are not on the list. See our top luxury hotels guide, our ryokan and onsen guide and our hotel openings guide.
