Saga Balloon Fiesta: Planning Groups in Kyushu

6 October 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 2 min read

Every autumn, hundreds of hot-air balloons lift off from the riverbanks of Saga City in northern Kyushu. The Saga International Balloon Fiesta is the largest sky-sports event in Asia and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors over five days. The 2026 event runs from 30 October to 3 November, and it returns around the same dates each year, so it is a reliable autumn hook for a Kyushu programme.

How the event works

  • Mass launches at dawn. The main flights take off early in the morning, when the air is calm. A second session usually runs in the afternoon.
  • The venue. The launch field is on the Kase River, on the edge of Saga City.
  • A temporary station. JR opens a special stop, Balloon Saga Station, next to the field during the event.
  • Evening shows. Night events light the balloons on the ground, which suits clients who do not want a dawn start.
  • Weather decides. Wind and rain can cancel flights. We always have a plan B for the morning.

Where groups stay

  • Saga City fills first. Hotels near the venue are booked far ahead for the event.
  • Fukuoka as a base. Many groups stay in Fukuoka and travel by train to Saga. See our Fukuoka guide.
  • Hot-spring towns. Takeo and Ureshino are onsen towns in Saga Prefecture and make a good overnight stop.

What to add

  • Pottery towns. Arita and Imari are close by; see our guide to Saga, Karatsu and Arita.
  • Autumn colour. Early November is the start of the leaf season in northern Kyushu.
  • Food. Saga beef and Ariake Sea seafood suit a group dinner.

How we plan it

We secure rooms early, plan train or coach transfers to the field before dawn, and build a flexible day around the weather. For the wider region, see our Kyushu guide.
