Japan has some of the largest and best-run aquariums in the world. They are a safe choice for families, school groups and multi-generation trips, and they work in any weather. A good aquarium visit needs a little planning, because the most popular ones are very busy on weekends and school holidays.
The two best known
- Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. In the Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula, in the north of Okinawa's main island. Its huge main tank holds whale sharks and manta rays. It is about two hours by road from Naha, so it is a full-day trip. See our guide to Okinawa's beaches and diving.
- Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. By the bay in Osaka, with a central Pacific Ocean tank that holds a whale shark. Visitors walk down a spiral ramp around the tank. It fits easily into a city day; see our guide to Osaka.
- Many others. Most large cities and many coastal towns have a good aquarium. We pick the one that fits the route rather than adding a long detour.

Timing
- Avoid the peaks. Weekends, national holidays, Golden Week, the summer holidays and the New Year are the busiest times. Weekday mornings are the calmest.
- Feeding times and shows. Many aquariums run feeding sessions and dolphin or sea lion shows at set times. We plan the visit around them.
- A good rainy-day plan. An aquarium is a strong option for a wet day, but so everyone thinks. See our guide to the rainy season.
Booking for groups
- Group rates. Many aquariums offer a group admission rate for larger groups booked in advance.
- School groups. School visits are common, and some aquariums run short education programmes. Our educational travel guide covers school trips.
- Access. Most large aquariums are step-free, with lifts and wheelchair loans, which helps multi-generation groups.
- Coach parking. Some aquariums have limited space for coaches at busy times. We confirm parking and the drop-off point in advance.

How we plan it
We choose the aquarium that fits the route, book the group admission, time the visit around feeding and shows, and arrange transport and meals nearby. For more ideas, see our guide to family travel in Japan.
