Hotel Cleanliness in Japan: What Reviews Tell Agents

13 October 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 3 min read

Explera DMC Japan reads a new TrustYou study of 3.17 million hotel reviews as a reminder that bathrooms, showers and furniture, not the room as a whole, draw most complaints in Japan. A higher hotel class does not guarantee a cleaner room, so we check recent reviews and refurbishment before contracting group hotels.

Travel Voice reported on 9 October 2026 on a cleanliness benchmark from the review analytics company TrustYou. It looked at about 3.17 million reviews of 669 hotels in Japan, across six hotel classes, written between August 2023 and July 2026. Japan has a strong reputation for clean hotels, and the study broadly supports that. But it also shows where complaints gather, and that is useful when we choose hotels for a group.

What did the study find?

  • Cleanliness tracks the overall score. Across 30 major hotel brands and groups, room cleanliness scores and overall ratings had a correlation of 0.77.
  • Housekeeping is a big topic. About 13 per cent of reviews, some 425,000, mentioned housekeeping.
  • Complaints gather in a few places. Among comments on each item, the share that was critical was highest for furniture, then shower areas, beds and bathrooms.
  • Bathrooms trail rooms everywhere. In every hotel class, from economy to luxury, bathrooms and showers scored below the guest rooms.
  • Price is not a guarantee. The luxury class had the highest overall ratings but ranked fourth of six for cleanliness.

What does it mean for group hotels?

The headline for agents is simple: a higher category does not by itself buy a cleaner room. When we shortlist hotels for a group, we read recent reviews on cleanliness and bathrooms specifically, not the overall star rating, and we prefer properties where recent renovation has reached the bathrooms. In a compact city hotel, the bathroom is often a moulded unit bath, which is clean and practical but small; we brief clients on that before they travel. See our guide to hotel categories in Japan and to room configurations.

How is a room cleaned on a multi-night stay?

On a stay of several nights, housekeeping arrangements differ between hotels. Some clean daily as standard; others offer guests the option to skip a day's cleaning, sometimes in exchange for a small benefit. For a group, we confirm the policy in advance, tell the tour leader how to request towels or extra cleaning, and make sure a "do not disturb" sign on several doors does not leave rooms uncleaned for days without anyone noticing.

How does Explera use the findings?

We inspect hotels we use regularly, keep notes on bathrooms and furniture, and ask for the most recently refurbished room types when contracting. Housekeeping schedules also limit early check-in; see our check-in times guide.

FAQ

Are hotels in Japan clean? Generally yes. The study suggests complaints focus on bathrooms, showers and furniture rather than the room as a whole.

Does a luxury hotel guarantee the cleanest room? Not in this study: luxury ranked fourth of six classes for cleanliness.

Can Explera check housekeeping policies for a group? Yes. We confirm cleaning policies and room types before the stay.

What is a unit bathroom? A compact, moulded bathroom common in Japanese city hotels, with the bath, shower and basin in one small space. It is clean and practical, but we brief clients on its size before travel.
