Miyakojima for Groups: Bridges, Beaches and Reefs

Explera DMC Japan recommends Miyakojima for groups that want beach time in Okinawa without island hopping by boat. Bridges link Miyako to Irabu, Shimoji, Kurima and Ikema, so a coach reaches all of them from one hotel. Spring and autumn suit touring, and summer brings the sea and typhoon risk.

Miyakojima lies in the southern Ryukyu Islands, roughly between Okinawa Island and Ishigaki, and under an hour's flight from Naha. It is flat, ringed by coral reef and known for the clarity of its sea. Where Ishigaki is a hub for island hopping, Miyako is a place to stay put: three bridges link it to its neighbours, so a group can see several islands by road from one hotel.

Which islands do the bridges link?

  • Irabu Bridge. About 3.5 kilometres long and opened in 2015, it links Miyako to Irabu and Shimoji islands, where the sea views from the runway end are a favourite stop.
  • Kurima Bridge. About 1.7 kilometres, to small Kurima Island, with a viewpoint over the strait.
  • Ikema Bridge. About 1.4 kilometres, to Ikema Island in the north.

A coach day across all three, with stops at beaches and capes such as Higashi-Hennazaki, makes an easy first day.

What do groups do on Miyakojima?

  • Beaches. Long white beaches such as Yonaha Maehama on the south-west coast, with resort hotels nearby.
  • Snorkelling and diving. Reefs lie close to shore in many places. We use licensed operators and keep weaker swimmers on guided, sheltered sites.
  • Island food. Miyako soba, local fish and tropical fruit in season.
  • Slow time. Miyako suits groups that want rest after a city circuit.

How do groups get there, and when should they go?

The islands have two airports: Miyako Airport and Shimojishima Airport, whose passenger terminal opened in 2019. Flights connect with Naha and some mainland cities; routes change by season, so we confirm schedules before quoting. Typhoon season runs roughly from June to October, peaking in late summer, so we build in a spare day and flexible flights; see our typhoon planning guide. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for touring.
