Explera DMC Japan sees Tokyo's new sushi bus as a fun extra for small groups and families rather than a main dinner. Since 10 October 2026, a converted double-decker has carried 20 diners on a roughly 70-minute loop of central Tokyo from near Tokyo Station, with sushi sent up a conveyor lane on the upper deck.
The service, called SUSHI BUS, was announced in late September and opened for bookings on 30 September 2026. Travel Voice reported that it is run by SUSHI BUS Co., with WILLER ACROSS supplying and converting the vehicle and another company operating the bus day to day.
How does the sushi bus work?
The bus is a converted open-top double-decker, painted to look like a giant piece of tuna sushi. Sushi is prepared in a kitchen on the lower deck and carried up by a small lift to a conveyor lane that runs past the 20 seats on the upper deck. A clear roof closes when it rains. The loop of central Tokyo takes about 70 minutes and starts and ends at a car park near Tokyo Station. Sushi is all-you-can-eat and drinks are included. The operator says the service is aimed mainly at international visitors, but in the first days of booking about 70 per cent of customers were Japanese, and it plans to add more vehicles during 2027.

Which clients does it suit?
- Families and small groups. Twenty seats, a short ride and easy food make it a good afternoon for families with older children.
- First-time visitors. It combines a city sightseeing drive with a meal, which suits a first day in Tokyo.
- Not a formal dinner. It is a novelty, not a quality sushi counter. For a proper sushi meal, see our unique dining guide.
- Larger groups. With 20 seats, a group bigger than that would need two departures. Private hire of a whole bus has not been announced; we will ask the operator for any group.

What to check before booking
We confirm the departure time, the meeting point and how long before departure the group must arrive, since a bus cannot wait for latecomers. For allergies, religious diets and vegetarians, we check with the operator before booking; see our food allergies and dietary needs guide. For the rest of the day, see things to do in Tokyo.
