How to Save Money in Japan: 12 Practical Tips

Japan costs less than many visitors expect once they know where the value lies. The biggest savings come from choosing the right rail tickets for your route, eating set lunches and convenience-store meals, staying in business hotels or guesthouses, and using an IC card, while the free experiences — shrines, parks, markets and city views — are some of the best in the country.

Getting around

1. Compare a rail pass with single tickets for your actual route before buying. A pass pays off on long shinkansen journeys, not on short city stays. Our JR Pass guide explains how to compare. 2. Use an IC card such as Suica or ICOCA for local trains, subways and buses — it saves queuing and working out fares. 3. Consider overnight buses or low-cost flights for long distances, such as Tokyo to Hokkaido or Okinawa. 4. Walk. City centres such as Kyoto and Kanazawa are compact, and walking is often faster than waiting for a bus.

Eating well for less

5. Eat your big meal at lunch. Many restaurants, including good ones, offer set lunches at a fraction of their dinner prices. 6. Use convenience stores for breakfast and snacks: rice balls, sandwiches and hot food are good and cheap. Our konbini guide explains what to buy. 7. Try ramen, udon, curry and set-meal chains, and department-store food halls just before closing time. 8. Drink tap water, which is safe across Japan, and carry a refillable bottle.

Where to stay

9. Business hotels near stations offer small but clean rooms at good rates. Guesthouses and hostels cost less again. 10. Book early for peak seasons — cherry blossom, Golden Week, Obon, autumn colour and New Year — when prices rise fastest.

Shopping and sightseeing

11. Use tax-free shopping at participating stores; since November 2026 the tax is refunded when you leave Japan. Our shopping guide explains the steps. 12. Enjoy the free sights: most shrines, many temple grounds, city parks, markets, and free observation decks such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

Money tips

Carry some cash for small restaurants, temples and rural inns, as not everywhere takes cards. Check your card's foreign transaction fees before you travel, and withdraw cash from convenience-store ATMs, which usually accept foreign cards. Tipping is not expected anywhere. The first-time travel tips cover more of the basics.
