Three weeks in Japan is enough to see the classic cities and still travel well beyond them. The best 3-week Japan itinerary covers Tokyo, Mt Fuji, the Japan Alps and Kanazawa in the first week and a half, then Kyoto, Nara and Osaka, and finishes with Hiroshima, Miyajima and Kyushu — almost entirely by train, flying into Tokyo and out of Fukuoka or Osaka.
Week 1: Tokyo, Mt Fuji and the Alps
- Days 1–4: Tokyo. Four days allow the main districts plus a day trip to Kamakura or Nikko.
- Days 5–6: Mt Fuji or Hakone. A night by the lakes or in a hot-spring town, with Fuji views on a clear day.
- Days 7–8: Takayama. The old merchant streets and morning markets of the Japan Alps, with a side trip to the thatched farmhouses of Shirakawa-go.
Week 2: Kanazawa, Kyoto, Nara and Osaka
- Days 9–10: Kanazawa. Kenroku-en garden, the samurai and geisha districts, and excellent seafood.
- Days 11–14: Kyoto. Four days allow the temples at a calm pace, plus a half day in Nara.
- Days 15–16: Osaka. Street food, Osaka Castle, and a base for Kobe or Himeji Castle.

Week 3: Hiroshima, Miyajima and Kyushu
- Days 17–18: Hiroshima and Miyajima. The Peace Memorial Park, and a night on Miyajima to see the island after the day visitors leave.
- Days 19–20: Kyushu. Hot springs at Beppu or Yufuin, or Nagasaki's history and harbour.
- Day 21: Fukuoka. Food stalls and an easy departure from Fukuoka Airport, or return to Osaka.
Pacing a long trip
On a trip of this length, rest days matter. Keep one evening in four free, spend at least two nights in each place, and forward large luggage between hotels so train days are easy. Add a ryokan night or two along the way — in the Alps, at Hakone, or in Kyushu.

Rail passes and getting around
Long rail trips are where a rail pass is most likely to pay off, but compare the pass with single tickets for your actual route first. Our JR Pass guide explains how.
