Most of a Japan trip can be arranged as you go, but a few things sell out and are worth booking before you leave. Book hotels and ryokan first, especially for cherry blossom, autumn and holidays, then timed-entry attractions such as popular museums and theme parks, any restaurant you have your heart set on, and shinkansen seats for peak travel days.
Book first: where you stay
- Hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo for late March, early April and November, often six months or more ahead.
- Ryokan, especially small inns and those with private baths; popular ones fill early for weekends and holidays.
- Anything during Golden Week, Obon or New Year, when Japanese travellers fill hotels and trains.
Choose rooms you can cancel, so the plan can still change. Our ryokan guide explains what to look for.
Book next: timed tickets
Several of Japan's most popular attractions sell tickets for a set date and time, and some sell out soon after release:
- Popular museums and digital-art exhibitions in Tokyo.
- Theme parks such as Tokyo Disney Resort and Universal Studios Japan, especially at weekends.
- Seasonal events and illuminations, and some temple night openings.
Check each attraction's official website for when tickets are released.

Restaurants worth reserving
Most restaurants in Japan do not need a booking, but high-end sushi counters, kaiseki restaurants and well-known spots often do, sometimes weeks ahead. Some only take reservations by phone in Japanese or through a hotel concierge, which a local operator can arrange.
Trains and passes
- Shinkansen seats can be reserved in advance; it is worth doing for New Year, Golden Week and Obon.
- Rail passes should be compared with single tickets for your route before buying — see our JR Pass guide.
- Airport transfers with large luggage or a family are easier pre-booked.
