Dewa Sanzan — Yamagata, northern Tohoku

What is the Dewa Sanzan?

The pilgrimage of rebirth, and the only one where a client can train briefly as a yamabushi rather than watch one. Three mountains · 2,446 stone steps to Haguro's summit, in Yamagata, northern Tohoku.

Last updated: 6 July 2026

The route

What it actually is.

Three mountains walked as a sequence that stands for a life: Haguro-san for the present, Gassan for the past, Yudono-san for rebirth. Haguro is reached by 2,446 stone steps climbing through cedars three and four hundred years old, past a five-storey pagoda that is a National Treasure. The yamabushi of Shugendō — mountain ascetics in white, with conch horns — still lead practice here, and a few will take outsiders.

Before you sell it

What an agent needs to know first.

  • Yudono-san carries a real prohibition: what is there is not described and not photographed. Say this to a client before they arrive, not at the gate.
  • Haguro-san is walkable year-round and there is a road to the summit; Gassan and Yudono-san are snowbound and effectively closed from roughly October to June.
  • A yamabushi training experience is a religious undertaking with rules about food, speech and photography, not a costumed activity. It is arranged with the shrine and it is not available on demand.
  • This is deep Tohoku. English is thin on the ground, and the shukubo at Toge village are the right base precisely because they are not hotels.
What Explera arranges

One party, one itinerary.

  • The Haguro steps at first light, before the day visitors, with the pagoda to yourselves
  • Shukubo lodging in Toge and shojin ryori prepared by the temple household
  • Introduction to a yamabushi guide where the practice is genuinely open to visitors
  • The three-mountain sequence in the correct order across two or three days when the season allows it
  • Sendai or Tsuruoka transfers, and the timing that makes this workable as an add-on to a Tohoku itinerary
Lead time

When to start.

Six months, and longer for anything involving yamabushi practice — those arrangements are made with the shrine and cannot be rushed.

Season

July to September for all three mountains. Haguro alone is good from May, and extraordinary under snow if the client is equipped.
