What it actually is.
A network of routes through the Kii mountains to the three grand shrines — Hongū, Hayatama and Nachi, the last beneath Japan's tallest waterfall. Retired emperors made the journey from Kyoto more than a hundred times from the 11th century. The Nakahechi is the imperial route and the one almost every visitor walks: forested ridges, stone-paved sections, and oji shrines at intervals along the way.
What an agent needs to know first.
- Inscribed by UNESCO in 2004 as part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range — one of only two pilgrimage routes in the world with that status, the other being the Camino de Santiago.
- Walk a qualifying section of both and you can register as a Dual Pilgrim, which is a genuinely popular hook for European clients who have already walked the Camino.
- The Nakahechi is well waymarked and moderate: the daily distances are modest, but there is real ascent and the surface is uneven in wet weather.
- Onsen at Yunomine, Watarase and Kawayu sit on the route, and Yunomine's Tsuboyu is the only hot spring in the UNESCO listing you may actually bathe in.
