The Kurobe-Unazuki Canyon Route opens to the public on 2 October 2026, and it is unlike anything else on the Japan menu. It links Keyakidaira, at the end of the Kurobe Gorge Railway, with Kurobe Dam through the working infrastructure of a hydroelectric scheme — tunnels, a shaft lift and an underground cable car that were built for construction crews, not for visitors. For agents the key fact is commercial rather than scenic: the route can only be booked as a guided package sold through travel agencies, and capacity is capped. It rewards early planning and punishes improvisation.
How the route works
The crossing between Keyakidaira and Kurobe Dam takes about three hours and uses five stages, each one a different vehicle:
- An electric train along the gorge.
- A vertical shaft lift that rises about 200 metres inside the mountain.
- A battery-powered train through the High Temperature Tunnel, around 30 minutes, where the rock is still hot.
- An underground cable car — roughly 20 minutes on an 815-metre incline at 34 degrees.
- A tunnel bus of about 40 minutes to reach the dam.
Most of it is inside the mountain. That is the attraction, and it is also the briefing point: clients expecting three hours of gorge views need to know the experience is engineering, heat and darkness, with the scenery at either end.
How it is sold
- Packages only, through agencies. Individual tickets are not sold. The launch packages come from major Japanese travel companies including JTB, Nippon Travel Agency, Hankyu and Kintetsu, and they include accommodation.
- Capacity is limited — reported at around 400 visitors a week — so a group allocation is a real negotiation, not a formality.
- The 2026 season is short: 2 October to 30 November. From 2027 the season is expected to run from spring to late autumn, but the dates are not yet confirmed and we will not print them as fact.
- Prices are high by Japan standards, because a package bundles transport, guiding and lodging in a remote gorge. Quote from the current package, never from a figure seen in a news item.
The route was meant to open in 2024 and was postponed after the Noto Peninsula earthquake that January. That history is worth telling clients: it explains why the first season is short and why the operators are cautious.
Where it fits in an itinerary
The natural pairing is the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which also reaches Kurobe Dam. Together they make a crossing of the Northern Alps that no other region can match — but they run on different seasons and are sold differently, so they have to be built as two separate contracts. Weather can stop either one, and a sound programme has a fallback day rather than a hope.
