Kawagoe and Chichibu are the two Saitama destinations worth selling, and both start from Ikebukuro in Tokyo. Kawagoe, about 30 minutes away, is a merchant town of clay-walled warehouse stores known as "Little Edo". Chichibu, about 80 minutes away by limited express, is a mountain basin with shrines, river gorges and one of Japan's great float festivals every December. Kawagoe: Little Edo
- The warehouse street. Kawagoe's main street is lined with kurazukuri, thick clay-walled storehouses built by merchants to survive fire. Many are now shops, cafés and sweet makers.
- The bell tower. Toki no Kane, a wooden bell tower, has marked the time in the town for centuries and is its best-known image.
- Candy alley. Kashiya Yokocho is a short lane of traditional sweet and snack shops. It is popular with families and easy to fit into a walking tour.
- Temples and shrines. Kitain temple, with its connection to the Tokugawa shoguns, and Hikawa Shrine, popular with couples, round out a half-day.
- Access. Express trains from Ikebukuro reach Kawagoe in about 30 minutes. For groups, a private bus gives more control over timing and an easier return.
The Kawagoe Festival
The Kawagoe Festival is held on the third weekend of October. Tall, decorated floats are pulled through the streets and face off at crossroads with music and dancing. Its float event is part of Japan's UNESCO-listed float festivals. The streets are very crowded that weekend, so we plan groups around the busiest hours and confirm the dates each year.
Chichibu: mountains and festivals
- Chichibu Shrine is the town's centre and the home of its December festival.
- Nagatoro, down the valley, has river boat rides through a gorge and a wide shelf of layered rock by the water. Boat operations depend on river levels.
- Hitsujiyama Park is known for its pink moss-phlox fields, usually from mid-April to early May.
- The pilgrimage. Chichibu has a circuit of 34 Kannon temples, a shorter and gentler alternative to longer routes like the Shikoku 88.
- Access. The Seibu limited express from Ikebukuro takes about 80 minutes to Seibu-Chichibu. All seats are reserved, which suits groups, but peak dates sell out.
The Chichibu Night Festival, 2–3 December
The Chichibu Night Festival is one of Japan's three great float festivals, held on 2 and 3 December each year. Huge floats hung with lanterns are hauled up a slope into the town at night, with winter fireworks overhead. Like Kawagoe's, it is part of the UNESCO-listed float festivals. It is also very crowded. Chichibu has limited hotel capacity, so most groups visit for the evening and return to Tokyo, which needs reserved train seats or a private bus booked well ahead.
