Iwate is the largest prefecture on Honshu and one of the quietest in an inbound programme. Lonely Planet put Tohoku on its Best in Travel 2027 list in September 2026, and Iwate is where a Tohoku itinerary finds its strongest heritage day. Hiraizumi, a World Heritage site since 2011, and the castle town of Morioka both sit on the Tohoku Shinkansen, so a group can reach them from Tokyo without a long coach transfer.
Hiraizumi: the Pure Land temples
- Chuson-ji. A hillside temple complex reached by a cedar-lined slope. Its Konjikido, the Golden Hall, is covered in gold leaf and holds the remains of the four Oshu Fujiwara lords.
- Motsu-ji. A Heian-period garden built around a large pond, designed to represent the Buddhist Pure Land.
- How it was listed. The World Heritage site covers Chuson-ji, Motsu-ji, the former garden of Kanjizaio-in, the ruins of Muryoko-in and Mount Kinkei.
- Getting there. Ichinoseki Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen is a short drive away.

Geibikei Gorge by boat
Near Ichinoseki, flat-bottomed boats are poled up Geibikei Gorge between tall limestone cliffs, and the boatman usually sings on the way. It pairs well with Hiraizumi on the same day and suits most ages, because guests sit for the whole ride.
Morioka and wanko soba
- Morioka. A walkable castle town with rivers, old merchant streets and the stone walls of its former castle. The New York Times put it on its 52 Places to Go list for 2023.
- Wanko soba. Small mouthfuls of soba are tossed into the guest's bowl, one after another, until they close the lid. It works as a lively group dinner.
- Tono. A rural valley known for the folk tales Kunio Yanagita collected in 1910, for clients who want countryside.

How we plan it
We hold shinkansen seats, local coaches and guides who can explain the Fujiwara story clearly. Iwate fits between Sendai and Aomori; see our Sendai and Matsushima guide, our Tohoku region guide and the Michinoku Coastal Trail.
