Amanohashidate and Ine: Kyoto's Tango Coast for Groups

11 October 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 3 min read

Explera DMC Japan plans Amanohashidate and the Tango coast as an overnight from Kyoto: the pine-covered sandbar seen from a hilltop viewpoint, the boathouses of Ine, and winter crab from November. It is one of Japan's Three Scenic Views, about two hours north of Kyoto by direct limited express, and a quiet add-on for repeat visitors.

Most clients know Kyoto as a city of temples. Few know that the prefecture reaches all the way to the Sea of Japan, where the Tango Peninsula holds one of Japan's classic landscapes. Amanohashidate, the "Bridge in Heaven", is a long pine-covered sandbar across Miyazu Bay, ranked with Matsushima and Miyajima among the Three Scenic Views.

Amanohashidate

The sandbar is about 3.6 kilometres long and lined with thousands of pine trees. Groups can walk or cycle part of it, but the best view is from above: cable car or chairlift to a viewpoint on either side, where the sandbar looks like a ribbon laid across the bay.

A forest path opening onto the sea: coastal walks work best as short, unhurried stretches between stops.

Seeing it upside down

At the viewpoints, visitors take the traditional "matanozoki" pose: back to the view, bend over and look at the sandbar between the legs, so it appears to float in the sky. It is a harmless ritual that groups enjoy, and a good photograph for a crowd, though we give guests a hand and keep older travellers seated if they prefer.

Ine and the Tango coast

  • Ine boathouses. A fishing village where about 230 wooden boathouses (funaya) stand directly on the water, with houses above; a short boat cruise or a walk along the lane gives the view.
  • Temples and shrines. Chionji Temple and a historic shrine stand near the sandbar, adding a cultural stop.
  • Winter crab. From about November, Tango's crab is the main reason for a winter visit.
Tall pine trees against a blue sky: pine is the tree that lines the whole sandbar.

How we plan it

Amanohashidate is roughly two hours from Kyoto by direct limited express, so we plan it as an overnight to avoid a rushed day trip, often with a night in Miyazu or in a coastal ryokan. It links well with Kinosaki Onsen in Hyogo. Winter weather can close the lifts, so we hold a flexible plan. See our Kansai region guide, our Kinosaki and Hakone onsen guide and our Kyoto private tours guide.

FAQ

Can Amanohashidate be done as a day trip from Kyoto? Yes, but it is a long day. One night on the coast makes the programme more relaxed.

Is the upside-down view suitable for everyone? It is optional. Guests who prefer not to bend can enjoy the view standing or seated.

When is the best season? Spring and autumn for walking; winter for crab, with weather as the main risk.

Can large coaches reach Ine? Ine is a short drive along the coast from Amanohashidate and coaches can reach it, but the lane through the village is narrow, so groups leave the coach at a car park and walk, or see the boathouses from the water on a short bay cruise.
