The Yaeyama Islands sit at the far south-western end of Japan, closer to Taiwan than to Okinawa's main island. Lonely Planet named Okinawa on its Best in Travel 2027 list in September 2026, and Yaeyama is the part of Okinawa that most clients have not seen. Ishigaki is the hub, with direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka, and the other islands are short ferry rides from its port.
The three islands that carry a programme
- Ishigaki. The base, with the hotels, the restaurants and the airport. Kabira Bay is the classic viewpoint; glass-bottom boats run there, and swimming is not permitted in the bay.
- Taketomi. A small, flat island of low houses with red tile roofs and coral-stone walls, about ten minutes by ferry from Ishigaki. Water-buffalo cart rides through the village are the signature experience.
- Iriomote. Mostly jungle and mangrove, part of a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2021. River cruises and guided kayak trips are the main activities.

Iriomote's limits
Since its World Heritage listing, Iriomote manages visitor numbers. Some restricted trails and river routes have daily caps and require registered guides. We book these routes with licensed local operators well in advance, and we plan a river cruise as the backup if a cap is full.

When to go
- Spring and early summer. Warm sea and long days. The short rainy season usually comes in May and June.
- Summer to autumn. Typhoon season. Ferries can stop for a day or more, so we keep a spare day and a flexible flight.
- Winter. Mild, cloudier and windier, with calm cultural days and lower demand.
How we plan it
We arrange flights, ferry tickets, guides for Iriomote and hotels on Ishigaki. Yaeyama works as an extension after a mainland trip or after Naha; see our Okinawa beach and diving guide, the reopened Shuri Castle and our stargazing guide.
