Explera DMC Japan briefs clients on tap-to-ride fares in Tokyo, where 11 railway companies now accept contactless bank cards at the ticket gates. Since 25 March 2026 the service has run as one system across their 54 lines and 729 stations, so the same card works on every one of those lines.
The 11 companies include Tokyo Metro, the Toei lines, Tokyu, Keio, Odakyu, Tobu, Seibu, Keikyu and Sotetsu. JR East, which runs the Yamanote Line and most JR trains around Tokyo, is not part of it.
What does tap-to-ride mean for clients?
- No card to buy or top up. A client can tap the same contactless card or phone they use at home at a marked gate.
- Not every gate takes it. Only gates with the touch-payment mark accept bank cards, so travellers should look for the sign.
- JR lines still need another ticket. For JR East trains a client needs an IC card such as Suica, a paper ticket or a rail pass.
- Card terms vary. Foreign transaction fees depend on the client's own bank, so we suggest checking them before travel.

How do we use it for groups?
- Free time, not group transfers. Tap-to-ride suits clients moving on their own in free time. For a group moving together we still arrange IC cards, group tickets or a coach.
- One card per person. Each traveller needs their own card or phone to pass a gate, so families should plan for every member.
- Other regions differ. JR Kyushu runs its own bank-card touch service, and we check what each city accepts before we brief clients.
- Passes stay useful. Day passes and rail passes can still cost less than paying per ride, so we compare them for each itinerary.
