Explera DMC Japan adds an evening at Nijo Castle to Kyoto programmes this autumn. "NAKED meets Nijo Castle 2026", a night show of light, projection, sound and scent, runs across the castle grounds from 23 October to 5 December 2026, every evening from 18:00 to 22:00, with last entry at 21:00.
This year the show marks 400 years since the Kan'ei Imperial Visit of 1626, when the emperor came to Nijo Castle as a guest of the Tokugawa shoguns. It tells the story through Tokugawa Masako, the shogun's daughter who became empress.
What will clients see at Nijo Castle at night?
- A route through the grounds. The show leads from the Karamon gate past the Ninomaru Palace, the inner moat and the Seiryuen garden.
- Light, sound and scent. Projection mapping and lighting are paired with music and scent along the route.
- A World Heritage site. Nijo Castle is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, and the Ninomaru Palace is a National Treasure.
- Daytime visits are separate. The castle's normal daytime opening is a different visit with its own entry.

How do we plan an evening at Nijo Castle?
- Day and night together. We often show clients the Ninomaru Palace by day, then bring them back after dinner for the show.
- Buy tickets early. Tickets are sold either for Monday to Thursday or for Fridays, weekends and holidays, and weekend evenings are the busiest, so we book group tickets in advance.
- Dress for the cold. The route is outdoors and November evenings in Kyoto are cold, so we tell clients to bring a warm layer.
- Short transfers. The castle is in central Kyoto, close to Nijojo-mae Station on the Tozai subway line, so we keep the transfer short.
