Nozomi All-Reserved Peak Days: Rail Planning for Groups

22 October 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 2 min read

Two Shinkansen trains waiting side by side at a station platform.

Explera DMC Japan books reserved Shinkansen seats for every group that travels on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines over the busiest holidays. On those days every Nozomi between Tokyo and Hakata runs with reserved seats only, so a traveller holding a non-reserved ticket may board but cannot take a seat.

JR Central and JR West use this rule for the three big holiday peaks: the year-end and New Year holidays, Golden Week and Obon. For the last year-end season it ran from 26 December 2025 to 4 January 2026.

What changes on an all-reserved day?

  • No non-reserved cars on Nozomi. The cars that are normally unreserved become reserved cars for the period.
  • Non-reserved tickets still let you ride. A traveller with a non-reserved ticket can board a Nozomi, but must stand, even when seats look empty.
  • Hikari and Kodama keep their non-reserved cars. These slower trains are the fallback for a traveller without a seat booking.
  • The whole Tokyo to Hakata line is covered. That includes Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Hiroshima and Hakata.

How do we plan rail for groups on peak days?

  • Book seats as soon as sales open. Peak-day Nozomi seats sell out early, so we reserve the whole group together on the first day we can.
  • Check every date against the peak calendar. We confirm each season's all-reserved dates with JR before we fix an itinerary, because the dates change every year.
  • Reserve space for large bags. On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, oversized bags need a seat with a luggage space booked in advance, so we book it or forward the bags.
  • Use group tickets where they fit. For larger parties we compare group fares with individual tickets before we book.

FAQ

When are all Nozomi seats reserved? During the main holiday peaks: the year-end and New Year holidays, Golden Week and Obon. The exact dates are set each season, so we confirm them before booking.

Can a traveller with a non-reserved ticket ride a Nozomi on those days? Yes, but only standing. All seats are reserved, even ones that look empty.

Which trains still have non-reserved cars on peak days? Hikari and Kodama trains keep their non-reserved cars. They are slower than Nozomi and stop more often.

How far ahead should groups book peak-day Shinkansen seats? As early as possible, ideally on the day seat sales open, so the whole group can sit together.
