SUPER GT: Japan's Best Racing Series, and the Easiest Motorsport Trip to Sell

17 September 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 4 min read

Ask a motorsport enthusiast which championship produces the best racing in the world and a surprising number will answer SUPER GT — then admit they have never seen it in person. That gap is the opportunity. Japan's premier sports-car series runs factory-backed machinery in front of enormous, deeply knowledgeable crowds, at circuits that international visitors can actually get tickets for, and almost nobody outside Japan packages it as travel.

How the series works

SUPER GT runs two classes on track at the same time, which is the whole point:

  • GT500 — the headline class: purpose-built cars from Japan's major manufacturers, with works teams and professional line-ups. Close in performance to anything outside Formula 1.
  • GT300 — a deep, varied field of GT3 and Japanese-built machinery, mixing professionals with strong amateurs.

Both classes share the circuit, so the fast cars are constantly working through slower traffic. The resulting overtaking is relentless, and it is why the racing rewards a spectator far more than a single-class series does. Every round is an endurance race in miniature, with driver changes and pit strategy that a first-time viewer can follow.

For clients, the practical appeal is access. Paddock areas, pit walks and grid access at SUPER GT are routine rather than exceptional — the kind of thing that at a Formula 1 Grand Prix would cost more than the rest of the trip.

The 2027 calendar

Eight championship rounds, one of them overseas, plus the Suzuka endurance event on the same circuit. Dates as published and provisional until confirmed:

  • 3–4 April — Round 1, Okayama International Circuit, Mimasaka
  • 3–4 May — Round 2, Fuji Speedway, Shizuoka (inside Golden Week — contract early)
  • 18–19 June — Round 3, Sepang, Malaysia (the overseas round)
  • 31 July–1 August — Round 4, Suzuka Circuit, Mie
  • 4–5 September — Intercontinental GT Challenge Suzuka 1000km, Suzuka Circuit
  • 18–19 September — Round 5, Sportsland SUGO, Miyagi
  • 16–17 October — Round 6, Autopolis, Oita
  • 6–7 November — Round 7, Fuji Speedway, Shizuoka
  • 20–21 November — Round 8, Mobility Resort Motegi, Tochigi

Which round to sell

They are not interchangeable — the round determines the trip:

  • Okayama (April) — the season opener, and the best-kept secret on the calendar. Pairs with Kurashiki's canal quarter and sits within easy reach of Hiroshima and Miyajima.
  • Fuji (May and November) — the most scenic venue in Japanese motorsport, with the mountain behind the pit straight on a clear day. The May round collides with Golden Week; the November round is the better sell.
  • Suzuka (July/August) — the great circuit, in genuinely punishing summer heat. Brief clients honestly about the humidity and build the day around shade and hydration.
  • SUGO (September) — a compact, hilly circuit in Miyagi, and the excuse to route north to Sendai and Matsushima.
  • Autopolis (October) — mountain Kyushu, at the best possible time of year, forty minutes from the Beppu and Yufuin onsen towns.
  • Motegi (November) — autumn colour in Tochigi, an hour from Nikko.
Regional Japan is the real product — the circuits sit in places most itineraries never reach.

What the trade needs to know

  • Tickets are obtainable, and still book early. Grandstand and paddock inventory is far more available than for Formula 1, but the good categories at Fuji and Suzuka go first, and much of the sales channel is Japanese-language.
  • Accommodation is the real constraint. Every circuit is regional; the nearby stock is thin and race weekends bring minimum-stay rules. This is contracted, not searched.
  • Two-day format. Most rounds run Saturday–Sunday, which fits a weekend inside a longer touring programme far better than a three-day Grand Prix.
  • Weather sets the brief. Summer rounds are hot and humid; autumn rounds are close to perfect. Sell the autumn ones to first-timers.

FAQ

What is SUPER GT? Japan's premier sports-car championship, running two classes together — GT500 for factory-backed prototype-derived cars and GT300 for GT3 and Japanese machinery. The mixed-class traffic produces near-continuous overtaking, and each round is a short endurance race with driver changes.

When is the SUPER GT 2027 season? Eight rounds from Okayama on 3–4 April to Motegi on 20–21 November, with an overseas round at Sepang in June and the Suzuka 1000km endurance event in September. Published dates are provisional and verified before ticketing.

Is SUPER GT easier to attend than Formula 1 in Japan? Substantially. Tickets are more available and far cheaper, crowds are smaller, and paddock and pit-walk access that would be a luxury purchase at a Grand Prix is routine.

Which SUPER GT round suits a first-time visitor? An autumn round — Autopolis in October or Motegi in November — for the weather and the regional touring either side. Fuji in November offers the best scenery; Okayama in April is the quietest and pairs beautifully with Kurashiki and Hiroshima.
