Himeji Castle, Japan's best-preserved original castle and a UNESCO World Heritage site, changed its admission rules on 1 March 2026. Adults who do not live in Himeji City now pay about two and a half times the old adult fee, while Himeji residents keep the lower price. It was the first big change in the castle's fees in over a decade.
What changed
- Two prices. Himeji residents pay the lower rate. Everyone else, including Japanese visitors from other cities and all international visitors, pays the new, higher rate.
- Children go free. Visitors under 18 now enter free, which helps family and school groups.
- The reason. The city says the money will go to the upkeep of the castle, whose maintenance costs are expected to rise sharply over the next decade.
This is a resident price, not a foreigner price: the line is drawn by where a visitor lives, not by nationality.

What it means for quotes
- Update your costings. Any quote built on the old Himeji fee is now too low. We price the current fee into every day tour.
- Check other sights. Fees at popular sights can change. We confirm each one when we quote, and we list them clearly.
- Families gain. Free entry for under-18s makes Himeji better value for family and school groups.
- Local taxes are separate. Sight fees are not the same as lodging or visitor taxes. Our tourist taxes guide covers those.

Is Himeji still worth it?
Yes. Himeji is one of Japan's most impressive sights, and it is an easy day trip from Osaka, Kobe or Kyoto by shinkansen. Pair it with the Koko-en garden next door. See our castle towns guide and our day trips from Osaka.
