The New JR East Pass: Tohoku, Nagano and Niigata by Rail

Explera DMC Japan uses the new JR East Pass to plan rail journeys across eastern Japan for clients. Since 14 March 2026, one pass replaces the old Tohoku Area and Nagano, Niigata Area passes. It gives unlimited travel on JR East lines, including the Shinkansen, for five or ten days.

JR East announced the change for international visitors in early 2026. The old two passes stopped selling on 13 March 2026, so an itinerary that once needed a choice between Tohoku and Nagano or Niigata can now use a single pass.

What does the JR East Pass cover?

  • JR East lines. Shinkansen, limited express and local trains on the JR East network.
  • Wider area. The areas the two old passes covered, together: Tohoku, Nagano and Niigata.
  • Five or ten days. The pass is sold in a five-day and a ten-day version.
  • Who can use it. International visitors on a foreign passport. We confirm eligibility for each traveller before we book.

When is the pass worth it for a group?

  • Long eastern routes. A route from Tokyo north to Sendai and Matsushima, on into Tohoku, and back through Niigata uses several Shinkansen legs.
  • Mixed regions. A trip that joins Tohoku with Nagano and Matsumoto no longer needs two passes.
  • Short trips. For one or two rail legs, point-to-point tickets are often cheaper. We compare both and quote the cheaper one.

For larger parties we also look at group rail tickets, which can beat any pass.

How do we plan rail for groups with the pass?

  • Seat reservations. We reserve seats for the whole group on each Shinkansen leg, so the party travels together.
  • Luggage. We send large bags ahead by courier, because there is little space on board for group luggage.
  • Off-network legs. Some private railways and buses are not part of JR East. We add those tickets where the route needs them.
