Explera DMC Japan is adding the reopened Edo-Tokyo Museum to Tokyo programmes for groups. The museum in Ryogoku reopened on 31 March 2026 after closing in April 2022 for its first large-scale renovation. It tells the story of Tokyo from the Edo period to today, and it sits next to the Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo hall.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says the renovation covered the building, the permanent exhibition and visitor services. The architect Shohei Shigematsu supervised the new design inside and outside the museum.
What is new at the Edo-Tokyo Museum?
- The permanent exhibition. Large building models have been expanded, and new large screens recreate the skies of Edo and modern Tokyo.
- Nihonbashi Bridge. The full-size reproduction of part of the old bridge is still the centrepiece.
- Audio guides in 13 languages. Guests use their own smartphones, which helps mixed-language groups.
- Food and shopping. The restaurant, café and museum shop have been updated.

How do we plan a visit for groups?
- Brief the guide. A guide who knows Edo history turns the models into a story about the city clients are visiting.
- Pair it with Ryogoku. The museum is beside the sumo hall, so it fits well with a sumo tournament or a chanko lunch in the area.
- Pair it with Asakusa. Asakusa and Senso-ji are a short ride away and show the old Edo townscape in the street.
- Check closing days. The museum has regular closing days, so we confirm the date before we fix the programme.
