The Shiretoko Peninsula, on the far north-east of Hokkaido, is one of the wildest places in Japan. It became a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2005 for its forests, sea cliffs and wildlife, including one of the densest populations of brown bears in the world. It is remote, seasonal and strictly managed, so it rewards careful planning.
When to go
- Summer and autumn. Most visits are from late April to October, when the sightseeing boats run and the roads are open.
- Winter drift ice. In late winter, sea ice from the Sea of Okhotsk can reach the coast. Drift-ice walks and cruises are a different product with a short season.
What to do
- Sightseeing boats. From Utoro, boats run along the western cliffs from late April to late October. Longer cruises towards the tip of the peninsula run in the main summer season.
- The Five Lakes. An elevated boardwalk of about 800 metres leads to the first lake. It is free, open all season and fenced against bears. The ground trail around all five lakes has rules: in the peak bear season, from about 10 May to 31 July, it is open only on guided tours; at other times visitors attend a short lecture first.
- Wildlife. Bears, deer and seabirds are often seen from the boats. We never promise a sighting.

Group practicalities
- Getting there. Memanbetsu Airport is the usual gateway, about two hours by road from Utoro. Nakashibetsu Airport serves the Rausu side.
- Small boats, safety rules. Boat operators work under strict safety rules, and trips are cancelled in rough weather. We always have a land alternative.
- Rooms. Hotels in Utoro are limited in summer. We secure them early.
- Bears. Clients must follow the rules on food, distance and trails. We brief every group.

How we plan it
We time the trip to the boat season, book the Five Lakes tour or lecture, and pair Shiretoko with eastern Hokkaido. See our Hokkaido tours guide, our wildlife guide and our winter festivals guide.
