Japan 5-Day Itinerary: Tokyo and Kyoto Without the Rush

Five days is enough for a first taste of Japan if the route stays simple: two bases, one shinkansen journey, and no more than two big sights a day. The best five-day plan is two nights in Tokyo and two in Kyoto, flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka so no day is lost going back. Here is the route the Explera team builds for short trips and stopovers.

The route at a glance

  • Days 1–2 — Tokyo. Arrival, then a full day of old and new Tokyo.
  • Day 3 — Tokyo to Kyoto. A morning in Tokyo, the shinkansen west, and an evening in Gion.
  • Day 4 — Kyoto. Fushimi Inari early, then Arashiyama or the Golden Pavilion.
  • Day 5 — Nara or a slow Kyoto morning, then departure from Kansai International.
The Imperial Palace grounds in central Tokyo, a calm first stop after a long flight.

Day by day

  • Day 1 — Arrive in Tokyo. Transfer from Narita or Haneda and keep the first evening easy: a walk near the hotel, an early dinner and a full night's sleep.
  • Day 2 — Old and new Tokyo. Asakusa and Senso-ji before the crowds, the Imperial Palace East Gardens, then Shibuya and Shinjuku for the evening lights and a food street.
  • Day 3 — West to Kyoto. Meiji Jingu or Tsukiji's outer market in the morning, then the shinkansen to Kyoto, a little over two hours. Spend the evening in the Higashiyama lanes and Gion.
  • Day 4 — Kyoto in depth. Fushimi Inari's torii gates at 7am, then either the Arashiyama bamboo grove or Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. A tea ceremony fits well in the afternoon.
  • Day 5 — Nara, then home. A morning in Nara for Todai-ji and the deer park, 45 minutes from Kyoto, then on to Kansai International. If the flight is early, swap Nara for a slow Kyoto breakfast and an early transfer.

Getting around in five days

Only one long journey is needed: Tokyo to Kyoto by shinkansen. A national rail pass rarely pays off on a route this short, so point-to-point tickets are usually the better choice — compare the current fares in our JR Pass guide. Use a rechargeable IC card for metro and local trains, and forward the large suitcases from Tokyo to Kyoto the day before you travel, so the train ride is with a day bag only.

Two other ways to spend five days

  • Tokyo and Hakone. Three nights in Tokyo and one in a Hakone ryokan with a hot-spring bath and Mt Fuji views — no long rail journey at all, ideal for a stopover.
  • Kyoto and Osaka. Fly into Kansai, stay three nights in Kyoto and one in Osaka for its street food, with Nara as a day trip. Good for travellers who have already seen Tokyo.

When to go

Late March to early April (cherry blossom) and November (autumn colour) are the most beautiful times and the busiest. May and October give mild weather with fewer crowds, outside Japan's Golden Week holidays at the turn of April and May. Our best time to visit Japan guide goes month by month, and the Japan travel guide links every planning page in one place.

Making it longer

Five days is the minimum for Tokyo and Kyoto together. Two more days add a Hakone or Mt Fuji ryokan night and Nara at an easier pace — that is our 7-day itinerary. Ten days adds Osaka and a slower rhythm, as in the 10-day itinerary.

FAQ

Is 5 days in Japan enough? Yes, for Tokyo and Kyoto at a comfortable pace. It is not enough to add Hiroshima, Hokkaido or Okinawa without rushing; those suit seven days or more.

What is the best 5-day Japan itinerary for first-timers? Two nights in Tokyo and two in Kyoto, travelling between them by shinkansen, with Nara on the last morning and departure from Kansai International.

Should I get a JR Pass for 5 days in Japan? Usually not. With only one long journey, Tokyo to Kyoto, point-to-point tickets tend to cost less. Compare the exact fares with the current pass price before buying.

Can I see Mt Fuji on a 5-day trip? Yes, by choosing the Tokyo and Hakone version, or by adding a Mt Fuji day trip from Tokyo. Views are clearest from late autumn to early spring.
