Japan in April — 卯月, Uzuki.
The most oversold month in Japan, and still worth every yen if it is built properly.
What is April called in the traditional Japanese calendar?
April is Uzuki — the month of the u-no-hana, the white deutzia flower that opens as the cherry falls. Its season word is Hanami, a moving window, roughly late March to early May as the front travels north.

Blossom viewing.
Sitting under the cherry with food and drink, which sounds slight and is not: it is the one week of the year the whole country agrees to stop and look at something. The front moves from Kyushu to Hokkaido over about six weeks, so a client who misses it in Kyoto can catch it in Hirosaki.
What April actually does to a file.
Book a year out or do not promise blossom. Kyoto and Tokyo rates in the first ten days are the highest of the year outside New Year, coaches are scarce because domestic operators hold them, and the good ryokan were full before the forecast existed. The reward is real: this is Japan at its most beautiful and clients talk about it for years.
The April programme.
- Blossom chasing north — Kyoto, then Kanazawa, then Hirosaki and Matsumae
- Night illuminations at Maruyama Park and Chidorigafuchi
- The Alpine Route reopening mid-month with the snow corridor still standing
- Takayama Spring Festival on 14 and 15 April, one of the finest float festivals in Japan
Japan in April — what agents ask.
What is April called in the traditional Japanese calendar?
April is Uzuki — the month of the u-no-hana, the white deutzia flower that opens as the cherry falls. The name comes from the old lunisolar calendar and is still used in tea, kaiseki menus and shop signage.

Is April a good month to send clients to Japan?
April is the hardest month to buy and the easiest to sell, and the difference between a good April file and a disappointing one is entirely lead time.
What should agents watch for in April?
Golden Week begins at the very end of April and domestic demand is absolute — see May. A file that runs into it without allocation held will not be recoverable.
