Japan in July — 文月, Fumizuki.
Festival season starts, and so does the heat.
What is July called in the traditional Japanese calendar?
July is Fumizuki — the month of letters — from the poems written out and hung up at Tanabata. Its season word is Tanabata, 7 July in most of Japan, 6 to 8 August in Sendai and much of Tohoku.

The star festival.
The one night the weaver star and the herdsman star are allowed to meet. Wishes are written on paper strips and tied to bamboo. Sendai keeps the old-calendar date in August and does it on a scale nowhere else attempts, with streamers the height of buildings through the arcades.
What July actually does to a file.
From the second week the heat is serious — 33°C with high humidity in the cities, and heatstroke is a genuine operational risk with older clients. Build mornings and evenings, leave the middle of the day indoors, and the month rewards you: Gion Matsuri runs all month in Kyoto and takes the city to capacity around the 17th.
The July programme.
- Gion Matsuri in Kyoto — the float procession on 17 July, the yoiyama evenings before it
- Tanabata on the 7th, and Sendai’s in August
- Mount Fuji climbing season opens — permits and huts, both now regulated
- Hokkaido and the highlands: Karuizawa, Kamikochi, Norikura at 20°C
Where July goes wrong.
Kyoto around 17 July is a hard block. Heat is an operational item, not a comfort item — plan hydration, shade and transfer timing into the file.

Is July a good month to send clients to Japan?
July is hot, humid and full of the best festivals in Japan, and it needs an itinerary built around the weather rather than through it.
