Japan in May — 皐月, Satsuki.
Golden Week, and then the best three weeks of the year.
What is May called in the traditional Japanese calendar?
May is Satsuki — the rice-planting month — the fields flood and the whole country turns the colour of new water. Its season word is Shincha, the first flush, picked from late April through May.

The first tea.
The year’s first tea, drunk within weeks of picking and tasting nothing like the tea sold the rest of the year — sweeter, greener, almost like a broth. Uji and Shizuoka sell it as a season rather than a product, and a tasting during the picking weeks is one of the best-value premium experiences in Japan.
What May actually does to a file.
Golden Week (roughly 29 April to 5 May) is a hard domestic block: shinkansen sell out, rates peak, and the good ryokan take only long stays. Then it stops dead. From the second week of May to the middle of June the country is at its most comfortable and its least busy, and almost nobody outside the trade knows it.
The May programme.
- Fresh-tea tastings in Uji and Wazuka during the picking
- Rice paddies flooding and reflecting the mountains — the classic Japanese image
- Sanja Matsuri in Asakusa, the loudest festival in Tokyo, mid-month
- Hiking that is impossible later: the Nakasendo and Kumano Kodo before the humidity
Japan in May — what agents ask.
What is May called in the traditional Japanese calendar?
May is Satsuki — the rice-planting month — the fields flood and the whole country turns the colour of new water. The name comes from the old lunisolar calendar and is still used in tea, kaiseki menus and shop signage.
What is Shincha?
The first tea, the first flush, picked from late April through May.
Is May a good month to send clients to Japan?
Once Golden Week ends around 6 May, Japan gives you brilliant weather, full green, low humidity and no crowds — the single best window in the calendar.
What should agents watch for in May?
Golden Week is not negotiable — hold rail and rooms by the previous autumn or route the file around it entirely.
