The year’s first tea, drunk within weeks of picking and tasting nothing like the tea sold the rest of the year — sweeter, greener, almost like a broth. Uji and Shizuoka sell it as a season rather than a product, and a tasting during the picking weeks is one of the best-value premium experiences in Japan.
What May actually does to a file.
Golden Week (roughly 29 April to 5 May) is a hard domestic block: shinkansen sell out, rates peak, and the good ryokan take only long stays. Then it stops dead. From the second week of May to the middle of June the country is at its most comfortable and its least busy, and almost nobody outside the trade knows it.

The demand you are competing with.
Two blocks sit on either side of the good weather. Golden Week itself is a national shutdown of available inventory — rail, cars and ryokan all go at once. Then, as the holiday ends, the school excursion season arrives: Japanese secondary schools move very large groups through Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima on weekday dates, filling mid-range hotels and putting several hundred students in front of the same temple gates by mid-morning. Corporate incentive and conference business also restarts the week after the holiday.

- Uji, Wazuka and the Kyoto tea country — the first flush is picked now and tasted nowhere near this fresh later
- The Nakasendo or the Kumano Kodo — the last comfortable walking before the humidity makes long days hard work
- Tohoku and the Japan Sea side — flooded paddies, late northern blossom in places, and none of the Kansai school groups

Can a file run through Golden Week at all, or should we route around it?
It can run if the rail and the rooms were held the previous autumn and the client accepts holiday rates; otherwise route around it. Reserved shinkansen seats go the moment the booking window opens, hire cars and the better ryokan take only multi-night stays, and a group moving city to city on those dates without allocation is not recoverable. The simplest fix is to start the file the day the holiday ends.
Why is the second half of May a better sell than April, and how do we make that argument?
Because everything except the blossom is better. The weather is warm and dry before the humidity arrives, the country is fully green, the sites are quiet and the rates have come back down from the spring peak — and the same budget buys a materially better hotel and a better guide. For repeat clients, and for anyone who cares more about how the trip feels than about one photograph, it is the strongest value in the calendar.
Where in Japan is May the wrong choice?
Okinawa and the southern islands, where the rainy front arrives ahead of the mainland and can sit over the archipelago for weeks. A beach or island-hopping file sold for late May is a real risk. Keep May on Honshu, Shikoku and the mountains, where it is arguably the best walking weather of the year, and hold the southern islands for the early spring or the autumn instead.
