Japan in February — 如月, Kisaragi.

The coldest month, and the one with the best snow and the fewest people.

Japan in February — 如月 Kisaragi

What is February called in the traditional Japanese calendar?

February is Kisaragi — wearing more layers — literally "clothes worn again", the coldest month written as a wardrobe instruction. Its season word is Setsubun, 3 February most years, the eve of spring on the old calendar.

Last updated: 6 July 2026

節分 · Setsubun

The turning of the season.

Roasted soybeans thrown out of the house at a masked demon, with the shout oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi — demons out, fortune in. The big temples turn it into a public spectacle with sumo wrestlers and actors throwing beans into a crowd of thousands. It is the most photogenic thing in the February calendar and it is over in twenty minutes.

The trade brief

What February actually does to a file.

Rates are at their lowest outside the ski resorts and their highest inside them. The Sapporo Snow Festival takes Hokkaido inventory to capacity in the first fortnight, and Chinese New Year moves through late January or February and takes city hotels with it — check the date every year rather than assuming.

What to sell

The February programme.

  • Setsubun at a major temple — Senso-ji, Naritasan or Yoshida Shrine in Kyoto
  • The Sapporo Snow Festival, and the ice sculptures at Otaru the same week
  • Plum blossom from late February, a month before the cherry and with a tenth of the crowd
  • Snow monkeys at Jigokudani, at their best in deep snow
Watch for

Where February goes wrong.

Chinese New Year is the single biggest variable in February pricing and it moves. Snow Festival week needs Sapporo rooms held a year out.

Where to base

Sapporo · Nagano · Kanazawa
