Gion Matsuri runs across the whole of July, but the weight falls on two parades — the Yamaboko Junko on 17 and 24 July — and on the Yoiyama evenings before each, when downtown Kyoto closes to traffic. For a luxury client this is one of the great sights in Asia. For an agent it is the hardest week of the Kyoto year: hotels price at their annual peak, the good machiya are taken a year ahead, and standing in a crowd for four hours is not what a high-end client came for.

A full year. Kyoto's luxury hotels and machiya sell out for mid-July well in advance and price at their annual peak, so late files end up staying outside the city and commuting into closed streets.
