The Snow Light Path is Otaru's counterweight to Sapporo's monumental snow sculpture: small candle lanterns set in snow along the old canal and the path of a disused railway, lit for a few hours each evening across roughly ten days in February. It is intimate rather than impressive, and it photographs beautifully. The dates are set annually and sit close to the Sapporo Snow Festival, which is the commercial point — the two together make a Hokkaido winter file, and neither on its own justifies the journey for most clients.

• It is an evening event of a few hours in a small city, so it has to be paired rather than sold alone — usually with Sapporo's festival, a ski week, or both.
• Otaru's own accommodation is limited and the February dates overlap peak ski and festival demand across Hokkaido, so the whole region is tight at once.
• Snow and cold determine the experience: the lanterns are lit outdoors in a Hokkaido February, and a client without the right plan lasts twenty minutes of a beautiful hour.

Basing decides the file.

Most files base in Sapporo and run the evening as a private transfer, which is comfortable and keeps the hotel standard where clients want it. Staying in Otaru itself gives a quieter, later evening at the canal and a noticeably smaller choice of rooms; we do it where the client's priority is atmosphere over comfort.

When to start.

Nine to twelve months, driven by Hokkaido in February rather than by this event. The dates are set annually and confirmed ahead of the season, but the ski and festival demand that fills the region is booked long before they are published, so the window is held first and the date confirmed into it.
