YOSAKOI Soran is a contemporary festival, not an inherited one: teams from across Japan perform choreographed routines with naruko clappers to arrangements of the Soran Bushi fishing song, competing across stages and street courses in central Sapporo over several days in June. It is loud, young and enormous, and it draws a domestic audience rather than an international one. For the trade it is the easiest great festival in Japan to operate — a real city with real hotels, clear staging, and a June date that avoids both the ski peak and the summer heat further south.

• The dates sit in early-to-mid June and move annually with the schedule, so the window is held before the programme publishes rather than after.
• Sapporo's hotel stock is good but the festival draws heavy domestic demand, and June is already a strong month for Hokkaido leisure travel.
• The festival runs across multiple venues and street courses at once, so without a plan clients see whichever team happens to be in front of them rather than the ones worth seeing.

Central Sapporo around Odori and Susukino, which is both where the festival happens and where the city's better rooms are. This is one of very few Japanese festivals where the right hotel is simply the right hotel, with no compromise between comfort and access.

When to start.

Six to nine months. The dates move each year with the programme, so we hold the early-June window and confirm the days when the organisers publish — that is enough for hotels, and seating is handled separately once it goes on sale.
