Omizutori is the popular name for the Shunie observances held at Tōdai-ji’s Nigatsu-dō through the first fortnight of March. Each evening, monks carry great burning torches along the hall’s wooden balcony and sparks fall over the crowd below. It is a religious observance rather than a show, and it reads that way: no seating, no commentary, a dark hillside and a sharp early-March cold. Handled carelessly it is twenty minutes of standing in the dark; handled properly it is the oldest thing most clients will ever watch.

• There is no ticketing and no reserved viewing, so the only levers an operator has are timing, position and interpretation.
• Nara’s own accommodation is thin at the top end, and the evening timing makes a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka a late, cold return rather than a simple excursion.
• Early March is genuinely cold after dark in Nara, and clients who arrive dressed for a city dinner will not last the ceremony.

Basing decides the file.

Staying in Nara removes the late transfer and is worth arranging where the inventory allows, though the top-end choice is narrow. Kyoto gives the better room and a long cold evening drive afterwards; we decide that trade-off by the client, not by the hotel list.

When to start.

Six months is usually enough for Nara rooms and guiding, but the fortnight overlaps the start of the spring season and Kansai tightens quickly. Files that also want cherry blossom later in the trip should be built a year out.
