Jidai Matsuri, the festival of the ages, marks the founding of Kyoto with a procession that walks the city’s history backwards: ranks of costumed participants representing successive eras, moving from the Imperial Palace to Heian Shrine on 22 October. It is a spectacle of research and wardrobe rather than of noise, and it reads best from a seat with someone explaining which century is passing. The complication is the date: the Kurama Fire Festival falls on the same night, north of the city, and the trade has to choose or plan for both.

• Late October is Kyoto’s other peak — autumn colour demand is already building and hotel inventory behaves accordingly, so the festival competes with the whole season for rooms.
• The procession is visually dense but historically opaque; without interpretation clients watch two hours of unexplained costume, which is the most common way this event disappoints.
• The Kurama Fire Festival the same evening pulls a large share of visitors onto a single-track mountain railway line, and clients who want both need that leg planned in detail rather than attempted on the night.

Basing decides the file.

Central Kyoto between the palace and Heian Shrine puts clients within reach of both ends of the route on foot, which matters because the procession itself blocks the streets it uses. For clients doing Kurama in the evening we base close to the northern rail access and accept a less central hotel, because the return leg late at night is the part of the day most likely to go wrong.

When to start.

Twelve months for the hotels. The date is fixed and never moves, so there is no excuse for a late file, and late October rooms in Kyoto are booked by autumn-colour demand that has nothing to do with the festival. Seating is a shorter lead and is handled separately once released.
