Soma Nomaoi is a cavalry festival held across the Soma districts of coastal Fukushima, with roots in the military exercises of the local clan. Riders in inherited armour process behind their family standards, race on an earth course, and contest banners fired into the air in a scramble that is closer to a field sport than a ceremony. It is one of the most genuinely unusual events in Japan and one of the least visited by international clients. The dates are set annually and have moved within the warmer months in recent years, so they are confirmed each season rather than inherited from the last.
- The dates are fixed each year by the organisers and have shifted within the warm season, so a file built on last year's dates is a file built on nothing.
- Coastal Fukushima has very limited quality accommodation, and the festival draws domestic visitors into what stock there is — so basing is decided early or decided badly.
