The National Fireworks Competition at Omagari, in Daisen, Akita, is where Japan's leading pyrotechnicians compete rather than perform. Shells are judged, there is a daytime competitive section as well as the night programme, and the creative rounds are built to a theme with music. Serious enthusiasts travel from across the country for it. The date is a Saturday late in August and moves annually. The operational reality is blunt: a small town, a riverbank venue, national demand, and accommodation that is spoken for a very long way in advance.

• Daisen and the surrounding towns have limited accommodation of any grade, and domestic enthusiasts book it year on year — so this is an inventory problem first and a ticketing problem second.
• Reserved riverbank seating is sold ahead through a defined process; the unreserved ground is crowded, and the difference in experience across a multi-hour programme is considerable.
• The venue empties onto a small road and rail network at once, and the departure after the finale is the single most underestimated part of the evening.

Basing decides the file.

Realistically, Akita city or the Tazawako and Nyuto onsen area, with a private transfer in and a late return. Staying in Daisen itself is preferable and rarely possible; we treat that as the exception rather than the plan.

When to start.

Twelve months. The rooms across the whole region go first, then the reserved seating, then the vehicles — and none of the three can be solved late by spending more. A file opened in spring for the same August is already compromising.
